Understand how to get a replacement license key

You can replace a license key if you are unable to activate it—for example, if the license key has expired.

If you purchased a time-limited license (for example, a student license), and the license period has expired, you can purchase a new license key from QSR International—visit the QSR Website for more information.

If you are using a site license (at a University or other institution), and the license has expired, you should contact your network administrator.

If you are not sure what type of license you are using, contact QSR Support for assistance.

Replace a license key

If you are prompted to activate your license when you start NVivo:

Click Replace License Key, enter your new license key and then click OK.

If you are not prompted to activate your license key when you start NVivo:

Click the File tab, click Help, and then click Replace License.

When you first start NVivo you are prompted to enter and activate your license. Activation is a simple and secure process that ensures only valid licenses are used to operate the software.

If you are using a trial version of the software, you do not need to enter a key, but you must activate the trial before you can use NVivo.

To enter and activate your license (or start a trial):

Start NVivo.
On the Welcome to NVivo 11 dialog box, enter your license key (or select the 14 day trial optionand choose an edition), and then click Next.
On the License Activation dialog box, enter your details. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) must be completed.

If you sent an activation request to QSR International by email, mail/fax or phone, then QSR International checks your activation request and sends you an activation key.

To activate your license using this key:

If you are not prompted to activate your license when you start NVivo, click the File tab, click Help, and then click Activate License.
Select Activate via Email, Mail/Fax or Phone.

In the Activation Key field, enter the activation key you received from QSR International.
Click Activate.

If you have not already set up your default NVivo user profile, you will be prompted to do this now—refer to Create, view or change user profiles for more information.

Switch editions when you are trialing the software

There are three editions of NVivo 11 software: NVivo Starter, NVivo Pro and NVivo Plus. Each edition features a different level of functionality to support a range of projects and research needs.
